Wedding Daze

Been busy lately, work's overloaded, demand was so high, so I just have to stop writing for a while.

To gain new spirit I entertain my self with a movie titled "Wedding Daze". Its genre is Romantic-Humorous-Drama. It's a story about a guy, who've just lost his fiancee-to-be in the day of the proposal. After that, the guy felt terrible and always thinking about his late girlfriend. Until one day, when he and his friend took a breakfast at a restaurant, his friend asked him to stop thinking about his late girlfriend, open his eyes, and find a new girl. Then the story goes, he saw the waitress in the restaurant and he suddenly asked the waitress to marry him, and the girl said "yes". And that's where the story begin!

This movie is easy to follow, full of humors, and lots of lessons about love. One of my favorite quote is

"And I think love can be instantaneous and insane"

Well, who knows when love will come.

Too Much Innovation

Based on WordWeb dictionary, innovation means 'The act of starting something for the first time; introducing something new'. The key point is "the first time" or "something new". The question is, is innovation a good thing or not? In my point of view, innovation is good, very good indeed. But only after it fulfilled several requirements:

  • The previous 'thing' is considered not optimal (this must also come after exhaustive analysis)

  • Has undergone a very thorough observation

  • Is planned very carefully

  • There's enough time to prepare everything before implementing it

  • There's enough resources to conduct it

Impelling such an innovation before fulfilling the above requirements will result an unexpected result. It could be positive, but could be negative (but based on experience, the negative impact is the most common result). Not to mention, if there are lots of innovations at the same time.

Eat that rich

Aerosmith's songs are always strong in lyrics, like one of their song Eat the Rich. But why I suddenly remember about this quote? Hahahaha.

Uncyclopedia

Feeling bored with that serious Wikipedia? Well, maybe you need to open his funny brother. His brother is just like him, they're written by lots of people all around the world, anybody can add new article, modify existing one, or even delete article on them. But they have one big difference, his brother is not a serious type, instead he turned the information upside down in a very funny way, just like this article about Bill Gates. That's why, anybody who wants to contribute to Wikipedia's funny brother must have a good sense of humor too.

Real Personality

Real personality of a person can be seen while that person is not in his/her comfort zone. In their comfort zone, a person has an opportunity to manage his/herself as a good and nice person. But when a difficulty comes (whatever it might be!), something that makes that person depressed, insecure, uneasy - something that puts that person out of their comfort zone, it's the time when we can see his/her real personality.

So don't ever think that we know someone if we haven't seen them in their bad/difficult times. And don't be surprised if we find out that the person that we thought was a good person turned out to be radically different.

XL Bebas, Is It the Cheapest?

XL is one of GSM operators in Indonesia. Recently, they have a promotion that they claimed as the cheapest fee to all operators in Indonesia, 0.1 IDR/s. But is it true?

If we read more thoroughly at their promotion website, we'll know that it's not entirely true, and tend to trick the user (although they made a very small notification about the condition).

They divide the promotion into several areas, where each area has their own 'calculation'. For example, in Jabodetabek, the promotion scheme is as follow: The first 2 minutes charged at 25 IDR/s and started from the 3rd minute until 4th charged at 0.1 IDR/s. How about minutes after 4? Is it going to continue at 0.1 IDR/s? No, they charged 25 IDR/s for minutes 4 and 5, and continued with 25 IDR/s from minute 6. So for six minutes talk we'll be charged for 3006 IDR.

Another area has a more cheaper 'calculation' than Jabodetabek, which in this case, they might be the cheapest.

Error 2739 While Installing OpenWorkbench in Vista

The internal error 2739 popped up while I'm trying to install OpenWorkbench in my MS Windows Vista Home Premium. It seemed that there's a problem with the JavaScript runtime. I googled for the workaround of this problem and I found one. I just need to re-register the jscript.dll library. So I ran my Command Prompt using Administrator privilege (right click on the file and choose Run as administrator) and typed "regsvr32 jscript.dll" and it's solved.

The 'truth' behind SUN-MySQL and MS-Yahoo!

Recently, there are two hot IT-related news that are written in a newspapers (printed and electronic) all over the world. The first is about SUN that bought MySQL, and the last is about Microsoft who is to buy Yahoo.

Ever wonder the real reasons behind that buys? You can read this 'behind the story' article, but don't expect a real story, because it's just a silly conjecture of one of PHP blogger.

Warning: a decent knowledge in IT is required :)

A Good Lecturer?

This post was inspired by a small chat between me and my friend. She was just followed a physics class in a private university in Jakarta. She said that the lecturer (junior lecturer) is not good because he couldn't teach well. He taught as if he taught for himself and don't care whether the students understood what he was talking about or not. My friend said that most of the students didn't pay attention to the lecturer (even worst, she saw several students were playing card in the class!).

I then argued her that each lecturers have their own style of teaching and can't fulfill all students' expectations. There are lecturers who are talented in teaching but there are some who aren't. But one thing for sure, all lecturers do want their students to be succeed in their study and will do their best to reach that goal.

A lecturer at the Dept. of Physics in University of Indonesia named Terry Mart wrote a good article about a good lecturer. He said that, "A good teacher is a bad teacher". Confused? Well, the point of his article is that a good teacher is a teacher who can make his/her student to study well, and it's far better than a teacher who can teach well. I suggest you to read the whole article (in Bahasa Indonesia).

Mestakung in Action

I believe that many of you have already heard about a concept named Mestakung. The idea was originated from an Indonesian Physician, Yohanes Surya. He said that, if a 'thing' (could be a person, sand, etc) is put in its critical point, then the 'thing' will get a support from its surroundings (universe?) so that it could reach its ideal point. For example, is someone is being chased by a dog, then he will be able to run faster than he used to be.

Most of people thought that the concept was some kind of a New Age movement that focus more to ourselves than to God.

Well, I think it could be true and false depending on how we implement it. But, on my point of view, the idea of Mestakung  is not entirely bad. The key here is "putting ourselves in a critical condition". In that kind of condition, we'll do our very best to escape from that condition (universe is giving supports?). But of course, we must not rely only on ourselves. After setting our condition in a critical state, do our best to overcome it, and always depend on God.

I've seen many example of people demonstrating this concept without knowing bout the concept. Take my friend for instance, he wanted to take an English test. If he always delay the registration, he knew that he'll never take the test. So he just registered to the test center (putting himself in a critical condition), since he fully aware that the test fee is not cheap, he do his best in the test (and thus come the supports), but still he rely on God (without Him we're nothing).

That's all I can share about Mestakung, if you need to know more about this concept, you can order the book from here.

PS: I'm not affiliated with either Yohanes Surya or Gramedia.

Tomcat 5.5 Virtual Directory

Lots of people stumbled here from Google looking for how to create virtual directory in Tomcat 5.5. Since I've deleted the post, I'll write it here:

Suppose you want to create a virtual directory named resource that’s mapped to a folder outside web application folder, e.g. to E:\Internet-Server\tomcat\resources. Virtual Directory on Tomcat 5.5 can be implemented by following these steps:

  • Open [Tomcat_Installation_Directory]\conf\Catalina\localhost (this can be different with yourse, depend on how you configure your server)

  • Create an XML file named resources.xml with the following content:
    <Context path=”/resources” docBase=”E:/Internet-Server/tomcat/resources” debug=”0″ privileged=”true”>
    </Context>

Restart Tomcat, and you’re done.
