A Good Lecturer?

This post was inspired by a small chat between me and my friend. She was just followed a physics class in a private university in Jakarta. She said that the lecturer (junior lecturer) is not good because he couldn't teach well. He taught as if he taught for himself and don't care whether the students understood what he was talking about or not. My friend said that most of the students didn't pay attention to the lecturer (even worst, she saw several students were playing card in the class!).

I then argued her that each lecturers have their own style of teaching and can't fulfill all students' expectations. There are lecturers who are talented in teaching but there are some who aren't. But one thing for sure, all lecturers do want their students to be succeed in their study and will do their best to reach that goal.

A lecturer at the Dept. of Physics in University of Indonesia named Terry Mart wrote a good article about a good lecturer. He said that, "A good teacher is a bad teacher". Confused? Well, the point of his article is that a good teacher is a teacher who can make his/her student to study well, and it's far better than a teacher who can teach well. I suggest you to read the whole article (in Bahasa Indonesia).

  3. Wow, it looks like you have lots of interesting post here..
    Okay..what I think is this..
To give good or bad label to a lecturer is a relative thing. It depends on the passion and motivation of the lecturer and the students, the interest of the students, etc, etc.
So it is too cliche to judge this one is a good lecturer, that one is not a good lecturer. To me, hmm.. if I ever in the position of a lecturer, the first thing that I do, I will encourage the student, to raise their curiosity about my course. So, they will search by themselves about my course, looking for the books for my course. But, I think, I also need to be careful, because it means as a lecturer, I need to maintain the growth of my knowledge, right?
It's too sad to see students nowadays, have no passion to have books, they just rely on slides and handouts. Pathetic..
Oh ya, I know that you are a lecturer..hehehe..do you know about mind map? It's not a new thing, but a very good technique to make notes.
Lots of good stuff here... I am signing out, btw, because I have give you lots of comments, and if you feel that you have obligation to do the same for me, that don't need. It's my pleasure to give comments on your stuff.
    Bye..

  4. Sometimes we need to label "something" (products, persons, etc) so that others know about that and make a preparation on how to deal with that "something". In this case, it's good for the students to know their lecturers' characteristics so they know how to deal with the lecturer. For example, if he/she is a "good" lecturer then the students must buy books, be not late, etc :)

Yeah, I knew Mind Map (Tony Buzan rite?) and have practiced it, but not consistently.

You know about upside-down psychology? People tends to do something when they're prohibited to, and tends not to do something when they're obliged to :)

  5. Hahaha..yes, I do know that upside-down psychology.
    It's human nature, I think.
It's the same with reverse-psychology, right?

Oh, about my last comment. Geez, actually, I really mean it.
Why would you think I use that kind of psychology to you?
I just hate when people give comment in other blog's people only because the obligation feeling.

Hahaha... I am such a plain girl, I say what I mean.

  6. Ups, I think you've mistakenly understand my message, sorry for not making it straight. I mean that, I'm a kind of person who'd like to do something when I was told not to do so, just like that reverse-psychology hehehehe..

So if you suggest me not to comment to your blog, then I'll be very gladly go to your blog and give comment there instead, heheheh. So if you want me not to comment to your blog, then you should suggest me to :)

And I think your post is funny that makes me want to give comment (I haven't read it all though).

  7. Dang, okay, okay, it's my mistake..
I should keep quiet about my blog..hehehe..
I don't know that you are included to upside-down-psychology group.

But, at least the final decision is in my hand, whether I am willing to approve your comment or not. Hehehe...sorry to make you dissapointed.
Because for me, my blog is like my 2nd diary. I don't need people to read it. I made those posts just for my private reading.
