There’re are lots of ranking methodology and results on the Internet. But the list of Taiwan Top Universities I wrote here will be based on QS Top Universities. You can read their university ranking on their website. I’ll list 3-6 top Taiwan Universities grouped by various categories. Prof. Kaoru Hirota's Visit

Several weeks ago, Prof. Kaoru Hirota from the HIROTA LAB, Titech, visit our lab. His lab's research topics are interesting. I hope to go there sometimes in the future. Hopefully :)

Tipe-tipe Mahasiswa

Terinspirasi dari pembicaraan kemaren sore, saya teringat dengan sebuah pernyataan yang disampaikan dosen saya sewaktu saya kuliah dulu, ketika beliau ditanyakan mengenai tipe-tipe mahasiswa. Menurut beliau, ada empat tipe mahasiswa yaitu sebagai berikut:

• Study-Oriented: Mahasiswa tipe seperti ini lebih banyak meluangkan waktunya untuk belajar. Datang ke kampus hanya untuk belajar, begitu selesai kuliah, segera pulang. Sampai rumah belajar lagi. Hanya tiga kegiatan yang sering dilakukannya, belajar, belajar, dan belajar.


• Business-Oriented: Mahasiswa tipe seperti ini lebih banyak meluangkan waktunya untuk mencari uang. Datang ke kampus hanya memenuhi kewajiban kehadiran, kalau dosen tidak strict, dia hampir pasti tidak akan ditemukan di ruang kelas dosen ybs karena sudah melanglang buana mencari uang. Baik buat usaha kecil-kecilan, ngajar les private, dll.


• Organization-Oriented: Ruang Senat Mahasiswa, atau Ruang Himpunan Mahasiswa, atau ruang-ruang organisasi adalah tempat dimana mahasiswa tipe seperti ini berada. Hampir semua waktunya diluangkan untuk kegiatan berorganisasi. Rapat, mengadakan seminar, rapat lagi, dialog, dll adalah bentuk-bentuk kegiatan yang sering dilakukannya.


• Fun-Oriented: Jangan sampai kuliah mengganggu jam bermain, kira-kira begitulah motto mahasiswa dengan tipe serperti ini. Sehari-hari jarang terlihat di kampus, kalaupun ada di kampus, tidak pernah terlihat sedang membawa buku. Seringkali juga terlihat asik berdiskusi, yang ternyata apabila disimak sedang mendiskusikan trik bermain game yang terbaru. Hanya sebentar dalam keseluruhan waktu di kampus mahasiswa tipe seperti ini terlihat serius, yaitu pada saat-saat ujian.

Pada tiap-tiap kampus, biasanya keempat tipe mahasiswa di atas ada, hanya komposisinya saja yang berbeda.

Beberapa Ide untuk Tugas Akhir

Beberapa hari yang lalu, ada banyak mahasiswa/i sebuah kampus tempat saya mengajar dulu yang menghubungi saya melalui email, YM, FS, SMS bertanya mengenai topik untuk tugas akhir mereka.

Beberapa mahasiswa/i sempat saya ladeni dengan memberikan topik yang terpikir saat itu, tapi kebanyakan tidak saya ladeni karena memang saya sedang tidak punya topik untuk diberikan.

Tapi beberapa hari ini saya mendapat beberapa inspirasi untuk tugas akhir, saya tuliskan disini supaya saya tidak repot dalam membalas setiap permintaan dan cukup mengarahkan ke tulisan ini. Berikut adalah topik-topik yang sekiranya bisa dijadikan topik untuk tugas akhir:

1. DBMS berbasis XML (cocok untuk prodi MI)


2. Crossword Puzzle Generator dengan Tabu Search (cocok untuk prodi TI)


3. Manajemen Bandwith Untuk Internet Kampus (cocok untuk prodi TK)

1. DMBS berbasis XML.

Fungsi-fungsi tipikal dari sebuah DMBS adalah mendefinisikan object-object seperti basisdata, table, dll, lalu memanipulasi basisdata seperti melakukan query, menambah data baru, menghapus, dll. Selain itu, karena DBMS umumnya diakses beberapa pengguna secara bersamaan, tentunya diperlukan juga penanganan akses secara bersamaan (concurrency).

Ini dapat dijadikan beberapa topik, mulai dari sisi penyimpanan data (bagaimana membuat "engine" DMBS yang dapat melakukan operasi-operasi basis data, seperti penyimpanan, penghapusan, dll), lalu dari sisi penanganan concurrency access, dll.

Kajian ini akan menarik karena penyimpanan semua "data", baik informasi mengenai pengguna basisdata, semua basisdata, dan object-object lainnya disimpan dalam file XML.

Kalau bisa usul, alangkah baiknya apabila DBMS ini dibangun dengan Java dan di-opensource-kan, agar dapat digunakan pada beberapa platform, sekaligus untuk media promosi kampus (apabila produk DBMS yang dihasilkan sangat "bagus").

2. Crossword Puzzle Generator dengan Tabu Search

Ini sebenarnya adalah lanjutan dari topik TA yang saya berikan ke mahasiswa/i TI tahun 2007/2008. Pada topik sebelumnya, Crossword Puzzle Generator dibuat dengan menggunakan metode konvensional, dan hasilnya sangat tidak optimal. Tabu Search adalah sebuah algoritma meta-heuristic yang cocok untuk persoalan kombinatorik seperti pembuatan Crossword Puzzle Generator tersebut. Untuk dapat mengerjakan topik ini, kemampuan programming dari mahasiswa/i haruslah cukup kuat.

3. Manajemen Bandwith Untuk Internet Kampus

Saya sudah tidak mengetahui perkembangan terbaru mengenai bandwith Internet kampus, tapi berdasarkan pengalaman dulu, banyak mahasiswa/i mengeluh karena Internet yang lambat, yang sebenarnya diakibatkan karena ada mahasiswa/i yang menggunakan aplikasi downloader yang sangat menyedot bandwith.

Topik ini bertujuan untuk mencari cara untuk membatasi penggunakan Internet di kampus, sedemikian sehingga setiap mahasiswa/i mendapat "jatah" bandwith yang sama.

Sejauh ini, baru itu saja yang bisa saya sumbangkan, apabila ada ide lain (tentunya dalam waktu dekat), akan saya share di blog ini juga.

Tak lupa saya ucapkan selamat mengerjakan Tugas Akhir untuk mahasiswa/i di kampus tempat saya mengajar dulu. Ganbatte Kudasai!

Life is short

Today is a very dark and gloomy day for our campus, because we lost two of our dear fellow workers Ramlan Marpaung (Photocopy Staff) and Berton Situmeang (Security) who died in a  accident in their way to Balige on Tuesday, July 01, 2008.

Ramlan was a very warm and helpful person. He used to greet me with his smile using his funny Batak language's accent. "Horas lae, tibu ma ho ro" and "Naeng mangan do lae?" were two greetings that he used to say to me when we met. He was also ready to give his help anytime when I need him for my work, especially in PMB.

Berton Situmeang was also a friendly security. When I went home from office late at night, I used to saw him walking doing his duty monitoring our campus, and he used to greet me there.

As a Christian, I believe that they're now with LORD in heaven. May God blessed and give strengths to their family.

This moment reminds me that life is very short, and I must make the most it. I'll try to never waste my time in useless activities.

A Good Lecturer?

This post was inspired by a small chat between me and my friend. She was just followed a physics class in a private university in Jakarta. She said that the lecturer (junior lecturer) is not good because he couldn't teach well. He taught as if he taught for himself and don't care whether the students understood what he was talking about or not. My friend said that most of the students didn't pay attention to the lecturer (even worst, she saw several students were playing card in the class!).

I then argued her that each lecturers have their own style of teaching and can't fulfill all students' expectations. There are lecturers who are talented in teaching but there are some who aren't. But one thing for sure, all lecturers do want their students to be succeed in their study and will do their best to reach that goal.

A lecturer at the Dept. of Physics in University of Indonesia named Terry Mart wrote a good article about a good lecturer. He said that, "A good teacher is a bad teacher". Confused? Well, the point of his article is that a good teacher is a teacher who can make his/her student to study well, and it's far better than a teacher who can teach well. PI Del Campus on YouTube

I just googled my campus with a keyword "PI Del" and surprisingly*, the first result is not my campus' homepage but a link to a YouTube video. After opening the page, I recognized that the video was taken by Alexander Schatten, a researcher at Vienna University of Technology who visited our campus around September 2007.  Besides recorded our campus, he also recorded street market at Samosir, a beautiful Island on Danau Toba. You can see his video collection here.
